The 10th IB meeting kicked off with a recap on the previous topic, inclusive education. Ms. Jade, last week's presenter, went over the big concepts for another round. In doing so, she stressed that inclusive education strives to cater to the needs of all students with the support and involvement of the parents, school community, and stakeholders in general. Shortly after, a set of new concepts were introduced by participants from National Taiwan Normal University. Isabella Liu, Yunwen Su, Kevin Lee, and Peiying Chen took turns discussing delivering instruction in the Middle Years Program to give the participants a peek on sample lessons and how they are put to practice. The group particularly zeroed in on Understanding by Design that was advocated by Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins in 1998. It follows backward design or backward planning of lessons that start from the learning outcomes to the setting up of indicators of learning and then the activities for instruction. One of the essential parts of UbD that the presenters covered is formulating Statement of Inquiry (SOI) based on concepts, related concepts, and global context. Further, the group had the participants look at their respective subject criteria and the variation of the terms used to indicate the levels of learning throughout the years. The session concluded with a message from Ms. Chingyu on how important collaboration indeed is especially in providing comprehensive and innovative education and in keeping up with the trends of the time.
