IB Meeting
Time: 2020/05/21
Place: 1ST conference room
Inclusivity, belongingness, understanding. These are the emerging themes at the ninth IB meeting held on May 21, 2020. Ms. Jade, a Special Education teacher, helped shed some light on what special education is and on how important it is to make everyone feel included in school. Starting solidly at school is hoped to help promote and overlay inclusivity in life in general. At the outset of her talk, she instigated brainstorming by having the participants compare and contrast “special education” and “being different.” This led to the matter of the day, inclusive education. She went on to highlight Universal Design for Learning, an educational framework developed by David H. Rose, Ed. D. of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and the Center for Applied Special Technology (CAST), to accommodate individual learning differences. Its salient features encompass flexibility of learning environment and spaces, which range from the learning goals, presentation, engagement, action, and assessment. Its philosophy underpins a curriculum that calls for collaboration between the school community and stakeholders to provide a comprehensive education for all types of learners.
